What happened?

Athenkosi Sandlana, a 27-year-old man from Matheko locality in Qunu Administrative Area, appeared in the Bityi Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 26 January 2026. He is accused of murdering a 38-year-old man from the same community following an altercation in November 2023.

The incident took place on 26 November 2023 around 16:00 at a local tavern. After a quarrel, the victim went home to rest. He was allegedly followed by Sandlana, who then assaulted him while he was asleep, reportedly using a steel chair. The victim was hospitalised and later died from his injuries.

Although a murder case was opened at the time, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) declined to prosecute due to a lack of evidence.
