Komani River had an overflow because of the heavy rain that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday 08 February 2023. Low-lying areas were the most affected by the flooding.

People that are affected from Silvertown informal settlements were evacuated from their homes, with the help from disaster management team of Chris Hani District Municipality. Gali Thembani Special School is used as a shelter for those that are affected by the rain.

Eastern Cape Department of Health said due to power outage in the area, Frontier Hospital has been affected and is currently operating with backup generators.

Health MEC Nomakhosazana Meth, said teams are on standby while they are busy working with the local private hospital and ambulance services to ensure that people receive medical assistance that they need.

“The department will remain on high alert and continue to monitor the situation until things return to normal,” said MEC Meth

Life Private Hospital in Komani has also been affected by the floods, and patients have been safely moved to their East London facility. Emergency services officials from Life Private Hospital, have confirmed that all their patients are safe.
