On Saturday, 24 December 2022 a fuel tanker that was carrying liquefied petroleum gas got stuck under a low-level bridge on Boksburg, East Rand, which resulted in an explosion that affected a nearby residential area and the Tambo Memorial Hospital.
On Monday the Health Department reported that the death toll of the victims that were affected by the explosion had risen to 18. Amongst the dead victims, 8 nurses and a driver for the Tambo Memorial Hospital died.
24 patients and 13 staff members experienced severe burns.
Family members of victims are advised to go to the Germiston Forensic Pathology Services to identify the victims.
The driver of the tankers is soon to appear in court.
