Business mogul, Patrice Motsepe has been nominated to run for the presidency. This came after his name was suggested by the Limpopo branch against Cyril Ramaphosa and Dr Zweli Mkhize.

Unity 2022 branch campaign deemed Mr Motsepe fit for the role as he is the only one who does not seem to be involved in corruption.

The South African billionaire has yet to accept the nomination. Being busy with the presidency of the Confederation of African Football, it is likely he might not accept the nomination by the Makeleng Magane branch in Sekhukhune. This however would make an interesting race if he were to raise his hand.

This is happening as the Limpopo ANC provincial executive committee (PEC) has endorsed the current president, Cyril Ramaphosa for the job.

Emmanuel Makgoga, the branch deputy chairperson dismissed the PEC’s assertions, accusing the PEC of not being honest going towards the elective conference.

The ANC in Limpopo and KZN has joined forces to fight the step-aside resolution at the conference, with KZN backing Mkhize to be the party leader.

“We have comrades in all provinces lobbying other branches to support Motsepe and we have spoken to him and have written to him. He has not agreed that he would stand, nor has he disagreed. We do not expect him to say yes now. Even the current president (Ramaphosa) has not raised his hand to say he is standing,” Said Makgoga.

He said he did not believe that Limpopo will choose Ramaphosa, as their agreement on many issues with KZN gives evidence.

Some wards in KZN have nominated Mkhize for president and Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu as his deputy. Mchunu, who is in Ramaphosa’s camp is seen as a unifying horse in the race for some branches in Kwazulu Natal.
