Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has pledged government support for a growing agro-processing enterprise in Bizana, stressing its role in creating jobs, producing affordable food products and driving economic development in rural communities.

The commitment was made during a visit to the business of Nandipha Sodwele, a young entrepreneur from Nyanisweni Village in Ward 7, whose maize-processing operation has become an important contributor to local agriculture and food production.

Sodwele owns and operates an agro-processing enterprise that converts maize into mealie meal while also producing piggery feed, crushed maize and silage. The business supplies affordable agricultural products to local communities and provides employment opportunities in an area where job creation remains a major challenge.

During the visit, Premier Mabuyane commended Sodwele for her determination and entrepreneurial spirit, describing young farmers as key drivers of food security, economic growth and sustainable livelihoods in rural areas.

The Premier pledged support to help the enterprise expand its operations and increase production capacity, noting that agro-processing businesses play a critical role in adding value to agricultural products while creating employment and stimulating local economies.

Sodwele welcomed the recognition and support, saying it would provide encouragement as she continues to grow the business. She also highlighted some of the challenges faced by emerging agro-processors and emphasised the importance of government support and strategic partnerships in unlocking growth opportunities.

The visit was attended by Eastern Cape MEC for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform Nonceba Kontsiwe, Alfred Nzo District Municipality Executive Mayor Tsileng Sobuthongo and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality Mayor Daniswa Mafumbatha. The leaders praised the enterprise for its contribution to local economic development and community upliftment.

While government has pledged support for the business, details regarding the nature, value or timeline of that support have not yet been announced.

Community members have welcomed the commitment shown by provincial and local government leaders, expressing hope that increased investment in agricultural enterprises will create more employment opportunities and encourage greater youth participation in farming and agro-processing.

Sodwele’s success story is increasingly being viewed as an example of how innovation, resilience and entrepreneurship can transform agriculture into a catalyst for economic growth. Her expanding enterprise is not only helping to improve food security but is also demonstrating the potential of rural businesses to create lasting opportunities for local communities.
