The Department of Home Affairs has introduced an upgraded online booking system designed to combat fraud, prevent the abuse of appointment slots and improve access to essential government services for South Africans.

The enhanced system, now available through the MyHomeAffairsOnline platform, requires users to create a verified profile linked to their South African ID number and email address before they can make an appointment. The department says the change will help ensure that booking slots are reserved for legitimate clients rather than being exploited by criminals.

According to Home Affairs, the upgrade comes after years of abuse of the previous booking platform by syndicates and unscrupulous individuals who allegedly manipulated the system to block appointment slots and sell them to members of the public. As a result, many citizens reportedly struggled to secure appointments for critical services such as identity documents, passports and other Home Affairs transactions.

The department has stated that linking bookings to verified user profiles strengthens security and limits opportunities for fraud. Officials believe the new measures will improve fairness and accessibility for people seeking Home Affairs services.

Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber said the migration to the MyHomeAffairsOnline platform directly addresses weaknesses that allowed criminals to profit from appointment bookings. “For too long, ordinary South Africans were disadvantaged by criminals who exploited weaknesses in the previous booking system to hoard appointment slots and sell them for profit,” Schreiber said.

He added that the upgraded system strengthens the integrity of the booking process while protecting citizens’ access to services.

The upgraded booking system is accessible through the MyHomeAffairsOnline portal and is expected to play a key role in improving the efficiency and security of Home Affairs services nationwide.
