Living in a small town has its downside, but it also has its perks being raised in a tight-knit community often means feeling like your whole town is your family, but believing in yourself is more crucial as it shows you have poise in your own capabilities and being able to trust yourself to do what you say you will do knowing those efforts will result in the desired outcome.

Miss Lusikisiki 2019/2020 Asanda Mxaba (21), entered for Miss University of South Africa to represent her institution Walter Sisulu University, for the betterment of student performance. Miss South Africa is a beauty pageant that will be held in Durban. The pageant focuses on struggles that students face during the period of their courses such as food allowances, toiletries, stationery, and all the basic needs for the study period.

“It is well known that the institution is always in a crisis of students having to fight for their education in terms of allowances. I want to make students living better by working hand in hand with them to make sure their needs are being taken care of in a proper way than before,” she says. She adds that she also wants to reach out to those who cannot afford toiletries and stationery because they must sacrifice to support their families back at home with their school meal allowance.

Her journey as a model started in 2019 when she contested in her hometown beauty pageant known as Miss Lusikisiki that is where she took the crown of being a Queen, she then continued to win other titles of Miss Eastern Cape Top Models. She also took part in various beauty pageants to mention a few she took part in Miss Province, Miss International S.A, and Miss WSU where she managed to bag some of the crowns.

Asanda always takes herself as her number one role model as she believes that she has not believed in herself to do things she would not have accomqplished in life. As a young girl from a small town, she aspires for people to acknowledge the beauty that comes with knowledge and the talent of her town that remains unrecognized.

“I want to set an example for the young generation that comes after me, that everything you want to be is possible you just need to tell yourself that you can do it. I also want to remind them about their beauty, they should not allow their society to doubt themselves, to be their safe place and run to home about the difficulties they face in this lifetime,” she concludes.
