The truck driver, identified as Sibusiso Siyaya, aged 28, has been charged in connection with the accident that claimed 21 lives, including 19 children and two adults. He made his first appearance in court.
Siyaya appeared in the Pongola Magistrate’s court on Monday.
The accident occurred on Friday afternoon on N2 near Pongola leaving 21 lifeless bodies when the truck driver collided with the bakkie that had school children and two adults.
The accident follows after numerous attempts and reports of the road being unsafe with truck drivers driving carelessly.
Sibusiso is believed to have fled the accident scene.
He handed himself over to the police during the course of the weekend.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Kara said, “Siyaya faces 21 counts of culpable homicide”.
KZN MEC for Education said that it was believed that the children were from different schools.
The matter has been adjourned until the 26th of September for a bail application.
