Today marks the 45th anniversary of Steve Bantu Biko, who was an anti-apartheid activist in South Africa in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Biko was a student leader of the then Students Organization known as South African Students’ Organization (SASO). He later on founded the Black Consciousness Movement, which would would empower and mobilize much of the urban black population.
Biko died in police custody on be 12 September 1977, at just 30-years-old, his death led to an international outcry.
Today Stephen ‘Steve’ Bantu Biko is remembered for the impact he made and the revolution he brought. Until his last breath Biko lived up to his mantra ‘It is better to die for an idea that will live, than live for an idea that will die.
