A rapid response by police in Tsolo has led to the recovery of 100 sheep worth an estimated R180,000, just an hour after they were reported stolen on the evening of 4 May 2026.
The livestock, believed to have been taken from a kraal in the Sidwadweni locality near Tsolo, were traced and found abandoned in a nearby area by members of the Tsolo Crime Prevention Unit (CPU). Police confirmed they received the complaint at around 21:30 and acted immediately, resulting in the successful recovery of the unharmed flock, which has since been returned to its rightful owner.
Authorities have not yet made any arrests, and it remains unclear who was responsible for the theft or why the animals were abandoned. Police say investigations are ongoing and have appealed to members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist in identifying the suspects.
OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, commended the officers for their quick action, stating the broader impact of livestock theft in rural communities. He stressed that such crimes go beyond financial loss, affecting livelihoods and cultural heritage tied to livestock ownership.
Police have reiterated the importance of preventative measures, urging livestock owners to secure kraals, improve lighting where possible, clearly mark animals, and report any suspicious activity or missing stock without delay.
