Learners at Diamond Senior Primary School in Bizana are showing growing awareness of sustainable agriculture following an educational visit by the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture (DoA).
The visit, conducted in the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, formed part of the department’s LandCare and Extension and Advisory Services outreach. Officials engaged pupils on key topics including conservation agriculture, gardening, and the importance of protecting natural resources.
According to the department, learners actively participated during the session, confidently answering questions and demonstrating an understanding of environmentally responsible farming practices. The initiative is aimed at equipping young people with practical knowledge to support long-term food security at household and community level.
Mlungiseleli Tuswa, Deputy Director for Natural Resource Management, described the engagement as a success, citing the learners’ enthusiasm as a clear sign of the programme’s grassroots impact. He also acknowledged the role played by educators and stakeholders in facilitating the visit.
While the department has positioned the programme as part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable livelihoods, it has not yet confirmed whether similar initiatives will be expanded to other schools in the region.
By introducing agricultural skills early, the programme is expected to encourage self-sufficiency and environmental responsibility among the next generation.
