An intense storm system is expected to hit parts of South Africa from Tuesday, with the Eastern Cape coastline facing flooding, strong winds and dangerous sea conditions.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) says a slow-moving cut-off low-pressure system will move across the country between Tuesday, 5 May and Thursday, 7 May 2026, bringing cold, wet and windy weather.

According to SAWS, the system is expected to make landfall over the western parts of the country before spreading eastwards, reaching central and eastern regions by Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning.

Heavy rainfall is expected to intensify along the south coast, including the Eastern Cape. SAWS warns that 24-hour rainfall totals could exceed 100–200mm in some areas between Tuesday and Thursday.

This could lead to widespread flooding of roads and settlements, particularly along the coast and nearby inland areas of the Eastern Cape.

Strong coastal winds are also expected, with the potential to damage infrastructure, disrupt transport routes, and cause power interruptions. Sea conditions are forecast to become very rough, with wave heights between 5.0 and 7.0 metres along parts of the coast.

SAWS further warns of possible localised flooding from severe thunderstorms inland, along with hail and damaging winds. There is also a risk of snowfall over high-lying areas of the Eastern Cape, although exact locations have not been confirmed.

Residents are being urged to avoid crossing flooded roads, secure loose outdoor items, and stay updated through official SAWS communication channels.

The warning comes as the system is expected to remain slow-moving, increasing the risk of prolonged severe weather in affected areas.

For communities in Pondoland and the wider Eastern Cape, the biggest concern remains flooding, road disruptions, and coastal damage. Rural areas with poor drainage infrastructure could be especially vulnerable if heavy rain persists.

SAWS says updates will be issued as the situation develops and the severity of impacts becomes clearer.

More detailed localised forecasts are expected in the coming days as the system approaches.

Readers are encouraged to monitor updates closely, especially if travelling or living in flood-prone areas.
