The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has challenged a media report that linked an alleged rape incident to its supporters during gatherings around Julius Malema’s recent court appearance in KuGompo City.
In a formal complaint dated Friday, 17 April 2026, the party accused the Daily Dispatch of “misleading and malicious reporting” after it stated that a 20-year-old woman had opened a rape complaint at Jan Smuts Stadium, where EFF supporters had gathered.
The stadium served as a key assembly point for hundreds of supporters who travelled to show solidarity with Malema during his sentencing proceedings, which attracted national attention.
According to the EFF, the report created a damaging impression that a confirmed rape incident had taken place in connection with its members. The party says this framing is inaccurate and has caused reputational harm.
In its complaint, the EFF states that internal engagements — including communication with the alleged victim and her family — found that no rape occurred and no act of penetration was confirmed. While an allegation of inappropriate touching was raised, the party says the individual indicated that no violation took place and chose not to open a formal case.
Police had earlier confirmed that an incident was reported during the gathering, but the complainant later declined to pursue charges, and no formal case was opened.
The developments unfolded during a tense period in the city, as Malema appeared in court following his conviction related to a firearm incident at a 2018 rally. The proceedings drew large crowds, increased police visibility, and heightened public attention.
For many observers, the dispute highlights the challenges of reporting on sensitive allegations in fast-moving, politically charged environments. The distinction between an initial allegation and a confirmed criminal case remains a key issue in how such incidents are communicated to the public.
The EFF argues that linking an unconfirmed allegation to its supporters without full context risks misleading readers and unfairly associating the party with serious criminal conduct.
At the time of publication, the Daily Dispatch has not publicly responded to the complaint, and it remains unclear whether the matter will be escalated to media regulatory bodies.
What also remains unclear is whether any further investigation will be conducted or if new information could emerge from authorities.
For now, the focus shifts to how both the media and political organisations respond, as the issue continues to draw attention beyond KuGompo City.
We will update this story if there is an official response or any new developments.
