SIU secures urgent court orders freezing properties and assets in UIF probe

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has obtained urgent court orders freezing multiple properties and assets as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged irregular payments linked to the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

In orders granted by the Special Tribunal on 19 December 2025, the court interdicted several respondents from selling, transferring, leasing, or otherwise dealing with identified assets while civil proceedings are pursued to recover alleged losses.

The first order involves a property identified as ERF 106 in Turffontein, Gauteng, held under title deed T14118/2023. The tribunal directed that the property may not be sold or transferred and that a caveat be registered against it. The respondent is also required to continue paying all financial obligations linked to the property, including municipal costs and insurance.

In a related case, the tribunal granted a broader preservation order covering multiple assets. These include:

• ERF 105, Turffontein (title deed T491/2024)
• An agricultural holding in Union Forests Plantation (title deed T1430/2023)
• Several vehicles, including a Toyota Dyna, Hyundai TQ H-1, Mercedes-Benz W205, and a Karet 1800 T Nosecone

All listed assets are now protected under an interim interdict, preventing any disposal or transfer without court approval.

The SIU brought the applications on an urgent basis, with the tribunal condoning deviations from standard court procedures to fast-track the matter. The orders will remain in effect while the SIU prepares civil proceedings, which must be instituted within 60 court days to recover alleged losses suffered by the UIF.

The cases are linked to UIF’s Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme (TERS), although the exact value of the alleged losses and the full scope of the investigation have not been confirmed.

The tribunal also allowed affected parties to apply for reconsideration of the orders, meaning the legal process is still ongoing.
