The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Ntabankulu is investigating a deadly shooting that took place at Ntabankulu Primary School shortly after midday on 22 January 2026. A former teacher at the school, previously charged with sexually assaulting learners, opened fire on three educators before fatally shooting himself. One educator died at the scene, while two others are recovering from gunshot wounds.

According to police, the suspect gained entry to the school by cutting through a section of the perimeter fence. He went directly to the school kitchen, where he shot three staff members.

One educator died on the scene. Two others were injured and are being treated in hospital. The suspect was also declared deceased after taking his own life.

Official Response

Police confirmed the suspect was out on bail at the time of the incident, and the investigation will focus in part on whether his bail conditions were violated.

Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, said:

“We extend our condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased educator. Our thoughts are also with the injured victims, and we wish them a full recovery. We condemn this violent act in the strongest terms.”

The school grounds have been cordoned off as forensic teams continue to process the scene.
