South Africans who want to improve their Matric results or complete outstanding subjects will once again have an opportunity in 2026 through the Second Chance Matric Programme.

The programme is run by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and provides free academic support and access to rewrite National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Senior Certificate (SC) examinations for eligible candidates.

Who Qualifies for Second Chance Matric

You may qualify to apply if you fall into one of the following categories:

  • You wrote Matric in 2008 or later and want to improve one or more subjects (NSC)
  • You are 21 years or older and want to complete Matric as an adult (Senior Certificate)
  • You were registered for Matric but missed final exams due to illness or valid reasons
  • You failed one or more subjects and want to rewrite

You must have:

  • A South African ID or valid passport
  • A statement of results or previous Matric record issued by DBE

Applicants must have a valid examination record with the Department of Basic Education.
