O.R. Tambo District Municipality has issued a renewed call for respectful and constructive engagement on its official Facebook page, outlining updated Community Standards aimed at promoting participatory governance and accountable dialogue in the new year.
In a New Year message shared on the municipality’s official platform, administrators said the page exists to connect residents—particularly young people—with local government and to encourage meaningful discussion around development, service delivery, and accountability.
The municipality stressed that while robust debate and critical questions are welcome, engagement must remain respectful and purpose-driven.
Key rules for engagement
According to the post, followers engaging on the page are expected to comply with the following principles:
- Respect is mandatory: Insults, hate speech, threats, profanity, or abusive language will not be tolerated and may result in content removal or blocking.
- Constructive criticism encouraged: Residents are urged to raise genuine concerns and seek clarity, rather than provoke or divide communities.
- No political campaigning: As an official municipal platform, party-political debates and campaigning are not allowed.
- Focus on service delivery and development: Discussions should remain aligned with accountability, governance, and practical solutions.
- No misinformation: False or unverified claims may be removed, with followers encouraged to ask questions instead.
- Privacy protection: Posting personal information of officials, staff, or residents is prohibited.
- No spam or disruption: Repeated or copy-paste comments intended to flood discussions may be removed.
- Service issues may be redirected: Complex or case-specific service matters may be referred to formal reporting channels.
Encouraging partnership in governance
The municipality said the standards are designed to ensure the platform remains safe, inclusive, and focused on progress, adding that meaningful engagement requires residents to participate responsibly and as partners in governance.
The message was jointly issued on behalf of Nyandeni Local Municipality, Port St Johns Local Municipality, King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality, Kumkani Mhlontlo Local Municipality, and Ingquza Hill Local Municipality.
“As we begin this new year, let us all recommit to using this space constructively, for the benefit of our communities and the future of O.R. Tambo District,” the administrators said.
The post concluded with a call for residents to “lead with respect” and “engage with purpose” in 2026.
