Eastern Cape Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, has addressed crime and Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBV&F) during a televised interview on Mpuma Kapa TV.
The interview, conducted by Jessica Bobo, focused on crime trends affecting communities, with particular attention on Gqeberha, which police have identified as a crime hotspot.
Guidance for Victims and Communities
Major General Kupiso used the platform to educate residents on the correct steps to follow after rape and other serious crimes. She stressed the importance of reporting incidents promptly and following lawful procedures.
According to the commissioner, early reporting plays a critical role in securing evidence and improving the chances of successful investigations.
Concern Over Withdrawn Cases
Kupiso raised concern about the high number of cases that are later withdrawn. She noted that financial dependence on perpetrators, particularly in households led by women, often contributes to this trend.
She said this reality continues to undermine justice for victims and weakens efforts to combat GBV&F in affected communities.
Protecting Crime Scene Evidence
In addition, the commissioner outlined key do’s and don’ts at crime scenes. She warned that interference, even by well-meaning individuals, can compromise evidence and delay justice.
Residents were urged to avoid touching items at a crime scene and to wait for police officers to secure the area.
Interview Broadcast Details
The interview is scheduled to air on Wednesday at 18h00 on Mpuma Kapa TV. Police hope the discussion will empower residents with knowledge and encourage cooperation with law enforcement.
