The Umzimvubu Local Municipality has officially handed over contractors to begin road and bridge construction in Ward 06, eMaxesibeni. The projects are expected to improve access between villages and support daily movement for residents.
Project Handover Details
The handover forms part of the municipality’s ongoing infrastructure delivery programme. Two contractors have been appointed to work on separate projects in Silindini and Mwaca villages.
Mzontsundu Construction will upgrade the Silindini bridge, which currently affects mobility during bad weather. The project is expected to be completed within ten months.
Sicelo Business Consultant has been appointed to work on the Mwaca bridge and access road. This project will also take about ten months to complete.
Improving Connectivity
The municipality says the bridges will improve connectivity between villages. Better roads will help residents reach schools, clinics, and economic centres more easily.
“These bridges will play a key role in linking communities and improving daily movement,” said Councillor Xoliswa Jona, who served as Mayor of the Day.
Local Job Opportunities
Both projects are expected to create employment for local residents. Each project is set to generate around ten job opportunities, with priority given to people from surrounding villages.
The municipality said local labour participation remains a key requirement for contractors working in rural areas.
Community Benefits
Residents have welcomed the developments, especially those affected during rainy seasons. Improved bridges are expected to reduce travel delays and improve safety.
