The Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), together with the Eastern Cape Liquor Board (ECLB) and Aware.org, has intensified efforts to build safer and alcohol-resilient communities across the province.
The partnership focuses on reducing underage drinking, improving public awareness, and promoting responsible alcohol use.
What Happened?
On 08 December 2025, the campaign, including education programs, school outreach, and community mobilization, under the theme “No to underage drinking.”
These initiatives aim to prevent alcohol abuse among children, promote healthier families, and support safer roads.
ECLB and Aware.org conducted advocacy activities across several districts. Their awareness drive reached 112,000 learners, teaching them about the dangers of underage drinking.
A further 14,500 parents were engaged in sessions that highlighted their role in preventing alcohol harm at home and in communities.
Why It Matters?
Officials say the collaborative approach between government, civil society, and local structures is essential to reducing alcohol-related harm.
DEDEAT noted that enforcement of liquor regulations, along with community education, remains central to preventing illegal sales to minors.
The department encouraged communities to use available support resources and to report underage alcohol sales.
It emphasized that long-term behavioural change is key to safeguarding young people and strengthening the well-being of Eastern Cape households.
