A new scam targeting businesses in the Ingquza Hill Local Municipality has sparked urgent warnings, as fraudsters posing as municipal staff promise tenders in exchange for upfront payments of R20,000.

What Happened

Scam calls are being made to local business owners, with the caller claiming to be “Mr Alfred Ntongane” or “Mr Mtongwana” from the municipality. The fraudsters promise lucrative municipal tenders — but only if the business pays a R20,000 “upfront fee”.

The municipality confirmed it is not involved and has distanced itself from these fake calls.

“We never ask for money in exchange for jobs or contracts,” officials said in a notice issued this week.

The Ingquza Hill Local Municipality urged residents to remain alert and report any suspicious communication. They emphasised that no municipal process requires businesses to pay upfront for tenders or jobs.
