Walter Sisulu University’s Cancer Epidemiology Research Group (CERG) joined a major primary health outreach in Whittlesea on 07 December 2025. The Ingqanga Group led the initiative in partnership with the Eastern Cape Department of Health, focusing on screening and awareness for oesophageal and prostate cancer.
What Happened?
Cancer Epidemiology Research Group (CERG) provided free health checks, education, and on-site screening services. Their team aimed to strengthen early detection and help residents understand common cancer risks.
The outreach offered community members a chance to access specialized care that is often unavailable in rural areas. Many residents participated and welcomed the support.
Health teams reported strong engagement from men over 40, who are considered high-risk for prostate cancer. In addition, awareness sessions helped families understand early symptoms and when to seek medical help.
Official Response
According to organizers, the day exceeded expectations and showed the importance of bringing health services closer to rural communities.
Representatives from the Ingqanga Group said the partnership with WSU helped expand the impact of the program. They emphasized the value of regular screenings and encouraged residents to use preventive health services.
Community Impact
The outreach strengthened health literacy in Whittlesea and supported the provincial goal of early cancer detection.
Residents who screened will receive follow-up guidance from the Department of Health.
The event also reinforced the role of university research teams in contributing to rural health development in the Eastern Cape.
