The African Nation Congress in the Eastern Cape celebrated World AIDS Day 2025 by calling for renewed community leadership in the fight against HIV and TB. The provincial statement reflected this year’s global theme, “Let Communities Lead.” The organization reaffirmed its commitment to closing treatment gaps and empowering residents to take an active role in the response.
Recent provincial data showed an adult HIV treatment cascade of 94–78–93. Most people living with HIV know their status, yet many remain outside lifelong antiretroviral therapy. The ANC said the province is working to locate and re-engage 148 322 individuals who are not currently on treatment.
Provincial Progress
The Eastern Cape recorded a 78% TB treatment success rate, exceeding the national target. The rollout of shorter and more effective drug-resistant TB treatments also continued across the province. These improvements, according to the ANC, show what is possible when health workers, communities, and government act together.
Key Messages from the ANC
The party said World AIDS Day is a moment to stand with those living with HIV, remember those lost, and raise awareness of ongoing challenges. The ANC called on traditional leaders, civil society groups, and community formations to join hands in a multisectoral fight against HIV, TB, and sexually transmitted infections.
They emphasized the need to eliminate stigma and discrimination. The statement said people who test positive must be supported to start treatment early and remain on it, because sustained therapy saves lives and reduces transmission.
Call to Action
The ANC commended the Eastern Cape AIDS Council for its work in responding to HIV in the province. Working with the Department of Health, the Council will continue to lead the multisectoral response to HIV, TB, and STIs.
