Greater Kokstad Municipality opened Day 1 of its Youth Council Strategic Planning Session on 20 November 2025 at Kokstad. The meeting brought together municipal leaders, youth stakeholders, and national partners to chart a stronger future for young people.
What Happened?
Mayor Councilor L. Madikizela led the opening session with support from Deputy Mayor Councilor K. Walker, Councilor Maphalana, and several development partners. Representatives from NYDA (Harry Gwala), Economic Development of Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), and the GKM-LED office shared targeted guidance on youth development.
Speakers encouraged young people to actively participate in shaping local strategies. The session emphasized key themes, including digital transformation, economic inclusion, and sustainability. These topics align with youth priorities linked to South Africa’s upcoming role as host of the G20 summit.
Participants also addressed urgent social issues affecting young people. These included unemployment, substance abuse, crime, mental-health concerns, and unequal access to opportunities.
“We want a Youth Council that speaks boldly, plans clearly, and acts with purpose,” one facilitator shared during the discussions.
Official Response
Mayor Madikizela stressed the importance of unity and innovation during the session. He urged local youth to bring forward solutions that support national and international development goals.
Municipal leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening youth structures. They emphasized that strategic planning must translate into action, especially as communities confront rising social challenges.
Community Impact
The Youth Council’s work is expected to guide local programs that improve access to jobs, skills development, and support services. As discussions continue tomorrow, young people will refine a strategic plan designed to be practical, inclusive, and future-focused.
Community members are hopeful that this process will lead to stronger youth representation and more coordinated efforts to combat social ills.
