SASSA has confirmed new improvements to the COVID-19 SRD system after concerns about data security. The agency briefed Parliament on 19 November 2025, explaining what changed, why it matters, and how these updates affect SRD clients. Here’s what beneficiaries need to know for November and the months ahead.
What’s New in the SRD System?
SASSA, led by Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe, presented new steps taken to strengthen the SRD grant platform. The briefing followed allegations raised in 2024 by two Stellenbosch University students who reported security gaps in the system.
Key updates include:
- Enhanced biometric identity verification, guided by National Treasury
- Improved digital security to protect client information
- Streamlined processing of high-volume applications
Acting CIO Jabulani Makondo said the digital model, introduced in 2020, allowed SASSA to manage millions of submissions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The system has handled millions of applications and now processes 17.8 million clients, with about 8 million approvals every month,” he said.
Who Is Affected?
These changes affect all SRD beneficiaries, especially those who verify their identity online. The upgrades aim to:
- Reduce fraud
- Improve system accuracy
- Speed up monthly approvals
Beneficiaries do not need to reapply. Verification steps remain the same.
SRD November 2025 Payment Schedule
| Grant Type | Payment Date (Estimated) |
| SRD R350 Grant | 24–30 November 2025 (paid after status reflects Approved) |
Note: SRD payments do not follow fixed dates. Beneficiaries must check their status on the official website or WhatsApp line.
Why This Matters for Beneficiaries
The strengthened SRD system protects clients from identity theft and fraud. It also ensures faster, more reliable monthly processing as the programme supports millions of unemployed South Africans.
