The Department of Social Development (DSD), working with the Department of Health and local organisations, hosted a packed World AIDS Day build-up event in Gqeberha on 19 November 2025. The programme, held under the theme Men Championing Change, urged men to embrace HIV testing and challenge stigma. The initiative forms part of the ongoing #RealMenGetTested campaign.
What Happened
Men from across Nelson Mandela Bay filled the venue as DSD and its partners rolled out activities designed to promote health awareness. The programme aligned with International Men’s Day and encouraged men to take responsibility for their wellbeing by testing for HIV and accessing healthcare services early.
Organisers said the campaign challenges long-standing social norms that often keep men away from clinics.
Official Response
DSD officials praised the strong turnout and emphasized the growing shift in attitudes among men in the province.
According to the department, the event’s success shows “a rising commitment from men who want to lead healthier, informed, and responsible lives.” Health partners also echoed this message, urging communities to break stigma and support early testing.
The department reiterated its commitment to expanding health outreach efforts as the province moves toward World AIDS Day.
Community Impact
The programme is already influencing behaviour change across the Metro. Community leaders noted that greater male participation in HIV testing strengthens family wellbeing and helps build safer, healthier neighbourhoods.
