A GCIS Community Media Workshop is underway in Postmasburg, Northern Cape, in collaboration with the Tsantsabane Local Municipality. The session, held during Government Exhibition Week, brings together leading media institutions to tackle key challenges and opportunities in the community radio sector.
What Happened
The workshop convened major stakeholders, including the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA), the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), SENTECH, the National Community Radio Forum (NCRF), and the GCIS Media Buying Unit.
Discussions focus on improving community radio sustainability, policy alignment, and access to broadcasting resources.
“Community radio is a vital voice for our people. This partnership ensures that local broadcasters remain informed, supported, and connected,” said a GCIS representative during the opening session.
The workshop also serves as a platform for media practitioners to share experiences and strengthen collaboration across provinces.
Official Response
Government officials emphasized that supporting community media remains a core part of South Africa’s communication strategy. The Department of Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) reiterated its goal of ensuring that all citizens, especially those in remote areas, have access to reliable information.
“Empowered community media means informed communities, and informed communities drive participation and democracy,” noted an MDDA delegate.
The collaborative effort highlights the State’s continued investment in developing inclusive, diverse media platforms that reflect local realities.
