Wits University has suspended a student accused of rape following a formal complaint lodged with the institution’s Gender Equity Office. The suspension comes after students gathered on campus on 11 November 2025, to protest against the alleged incident.
What Happened
The University confirmed that the matter was formally reported to the Gender Equity Office by another student. The accused student has since been placed on precautionary suspension while investigations continue in line with Wits’ disciplinary rules and policies.
University spokespersons have urged students to allow due process to unfold, emphasising that all reports are treated with confidentiality and seriousness.
Official Response
In a statement, Wits University condemned all forms of gender-based violence, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment. “Wits has a zero-tolerance policy towards gender-based harm and encourages all members of the community to report incidents as soon as possible,” the University said.
A dedicated online reporting tool has been launched to streamline the process, allowing staff and students to submit cases promptly and confidentially.
Community Impact
The incident has sparked campus-wide discussions on gender safety and accountability. Student activists have called for stronger institutional measures and survivor support systems. The University reiterated that gender-based violence undermines human dignity and the academic well-being of its community.
