What Happened
The ANC said it considered the request under guidelines adopted in 2021 and amended in 2022. These rules guide how the party handles allegations of corruption, crime, and ethical breaches involving its leaders.
Paragraph 3.1.1 of the step-aside rule applies only to members indicted to appear in court for corruption or other serious crimes. The ANC confirmed that Mchunu has not been indicted and that the provision therefore does not apply to him.
Official Response
The ANC clarified that the step-aside rule is not triggered in Mchunu’s case but emphasised that members who face public allegations may still request special leave voluntarily. “We welcome Comrade Senzo Mchunu’s emphasis that he understands that people are feeling the trauma of crime and corruption in the country,” the statement said.
The party noted that voluntary leave is permissible for any member concerned about maintaining organisational integrity while issues are being addressed.
Community Impact
The ANC’s decision aims to reinforce its credibility and strengthen public confidence as it continues addressing internal accountability measures. Political analysts say voluntary leave can help reduce tension while ensuring stability within the party’s leadership structures.
