The Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture has praised the Protea Women’s cricket team for their remarkable performance in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Final 2025, held in Navi Mumbai. Although South Africa lost to hosts India, the committee said the players’ determination, teamwork, and consistency embodied the nation’s growing sporting spirit.
What Happened
Committee Chairperson Mr Joe McGluwa commended the team for reaching another major final — following their appearance in last year’s T20 World Cup.
“It was another case of a missed opportunity, but the effort was truly commendable,” McGluwa said.
He noted that South Africa’s journey to the 50-over final showcased discipline, talent, and national pride. After a difficult start — being bowled out for just 69 in their opening match — the Proteas bounced back with a series of strong performances, including an emphatic 125-run victory over England in the semi-final.
“India may have won the final by 52 runs, but our team fought until the end,” McGluwa added. “We congratulate our girls for their resilience and the pride they’ve brought to the nation.”
Official Response
McGluwa urged the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the private sector to increase investment in women’s sport. He said South Africa’s back-to-back appearances in global finals proved that the nation’s success was built on talent and hard work, not luck.
“These achievements are not coincidental,” he said. “They reflect the potential of our women athletes and the talent within South Africa. With the right support, victory is within reach.”
He also compared the Protea Women’s rise to the success of South African rugby, saying both teams have “grown in leaps and bounds” through dedication and belief.
Community Impact
The committee’s statement has struck a chord with fans across the country. Many praised the team for inspiring young athletes and proving that South African women’s cricket is entering a new era — one defined by passion, unity, and pride.
