The Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Xolile Nqatha, officially handed over the newly completed Folokhwe Bridge in Folokhwe Village. The bridge forms part of the Welisizwe Rural Bridges Program, designed to improve accessibility and safety in rural areas.
What Happened?
On 31 October 2025, the handover ceremony celebrated the completion of a vital piece of infrastructure aimed at connecting residents of Folokhwe and nearby villages. Constructed in partnership with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), the bridge was built to ensure durability and resilience against flooding and other harsh weather conditions.
The project is one of 19 completed bridges across the Eastern Cape under the Welisizwe program, with 17 more currently under construction. These efforts are expected to boost access to essential services such as schools, clinics, and local markets, improving quality of life for thousands of rural residents.
Official Response
MEC Xolile Nqatha commended the teamwork and commitment behind the project.
“We are proud to see these bridges come to fruition. They represent our dedication to connecting people and improving rural livelihoods,” said Nqatha.
He emphasized that the Department’s mission goes far beyond simply building infrastructure. The Department aims to open pathways to opportunity, stimulate local economies, and strengthen the social fabric of rural communities across the Eastern Cape.
Community Impact
Local residents welcomed the new bridge, saying it will end years of travel challenges during the rainy season. Children will now reach school safely, and small-scale farmers can transport their produce to markets with greater ease.
The project’s success signals growing confidence in collaborative infrastructure initiatives between government departments and national agencies.
