On 20 October 2025, Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga addressed the G20 Empower Women Working Group (EWWG) Side Event in South Africa. The gathering focused on the theme “Bridging Generations, Transforming Masculinities: Culture, Faith and Care in Modern South Africa.” She called for united action to end gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) and promote positive masculinity. The event formed part of #G20SouthAfrica, the first G20 hosted on African soil. It brought together government leaders, youth, and faith-based organizations for open and meaningful dialogue.
Their Story
Minister Chikunga’s address was both emotional and inspiring. “We gather under a profound and timely theme, ‘Bridging Generations, Transforming Masculinities.’ This is more than a discussion about gender; it is a moment of collective reflection, responsibility, and renewal,” she said.
Her message emphasised that gender transformation begins with reshaping how men understand and express masculinity, not through power, but through compassion, care, and respect.
The Event/Occasion
The Intergenerational Dialogue on Positive Masculinities served as a key G20 platform to explore how families, communities, and institutions can challenge toxic norms. Participants shared stories of resilience and solutions rooted in African values. Under the banner “Africa’s G20: The People’s G20,” discussions stressed that global commitments must reflect real change at home, in households, schools, and workplaces.
Community Reactions
Community leaders and youth participants described the dialogue as a “healing space” that gave men permission to be part of the solution. “This was not just a conference,” said one youth advocate. “It was a movement reminding us that gender equality is everyone’s responsibility.” Many attendees praised Minister Chikunga for her passion and leadership in driving a national conversation about masculinity, culture, and accountability.
