The Walter Sisulu Local Municipality held a two-day Suppliers’ Day roadshow from 8–9 October 2025, aimed at strengthening local business participation in government tenders. The roadshow took place in Steynsburg, Venterstad, and concluded at the Maletswai Public Library Hall.

The initiative brought together municipal departments and economic development agencies to support small businesses with procurement, compliance, and growth opportunities.

What Happened

On Day One, the Local Economic Development (LED) Unit visited Steynsburg and Venterstad. There, Supply Chain officials offered clear guidance on:

  • Supplier registration
  • Request for Quotations (RFQs)
  • Municipal tender processes

Meanwhile, Environmental Health Practitioners explained food safety standards, hygiene requirements, and licensing. This helped small business owners understand what they need to operate legally and safely.

On Day Two, the roadshow moved to Maletswai. A multi-stakeholder platform was formed to deepen support for local suppliers.

Official Response

The Disaster Management Unit stressed the importance of planning for emergencies, especially for businesses that rely on consistent operations.

Representatives from key development bodies Joe Gqabi Economic Development Agency (JoGEDA), Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), and Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) presented available programmes, grants, and mentorships for small and emerging enterprises.

“This collaborative approach shows our commitment to building an enabling environment for local economic growth,” said a municipal spokesperson.

Community Impact

Entrepreneurs welcomed the chance to interact directly with officials and access real-time support. Many described the sessions as eye-opening and practical.

The event signaled a significant step toward inclusive economic development in the Joe Gqabi District. It also demonstrated how municipalities can be proactive in supporting Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs).
