The OR Tambo District Municipality, in partnership with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and several government departments, launched a district service campaign at Ndulini Senior Secondary School in Ward 18, Ngcoya Village. The programme focused on voter registration and access to government services in rural areas.
WHAT HAPPENED
The campaign formed part of government’s ongoing commitment to bring services closer to the people. Residents were educated on the importance of registering to vote and ensuring their names appear on the voters’ roll ahead of upcoming elections.
OR Tambo District Council Speaker, Councillor Nomvuzo Cingo mentioned that voter registration strengthens public participation in governance.
“Registering to vote ensures that people’s voices are heard and that communities influence decisions that shape their daily lives,” Cingo said.
The campaign also stressed that accurate voter rolls help municipalities allocate budgets and deliver services more effectively.
OFFICIAL RESPONSE
The IEC supported the initiative, noting that rural outreach is vital to improving voter participation, especially among the youth. Local government departments voiced out the importance of active citizenship and reaffirmed that such campaigns would continue in other wards.
Community Impact
For Ngcoya residents, the campaign created an opportunity not only to register to vote but also to engage with government services brought directly to their community. Youth participants said the session gave them clarity about their role in shaping the future through democratic participation.
Community members expressed appreciation for the district’s effort to ensure that even remote villages are included in voter education and registration drives.
