The Alfred Nzo District Municipality, in partnership with Winnie Madikizela Mandela Local Municipality, brought its annual Career Expo to Mpeni Senior Secondary School on the 23 September. The event forms part of the national Thusong Service Centre Week, an initiative launched in 2021 to bring vital government services and career opportunities closer to rural communities.
What Happened
Learners at Mpeni S.S.S gathered for a full-day career expo designed to open doors to various career paths and help students align subject choices with their future ambitions. Beyond career advice, the expo provided hands-on guidance for applying to higher education funding, including NSFAS bursaries and local municipality scholarships.

Special Programs Units from both Alfred Nzo District and Winnie Madikizela Mandela Local MunicipalitiesCouncillor Sindiswa Phosiwa led the session, highlighting resources available to learners and stressing the importance of informed decision-making for the future.

Speaking at the event, Cllr. Phosiwa said:

For many learners in Ward 2, opportunities to connect directly with universities, funding bodies, and career mentors are rare. The Career Expo not only introduced practical support but also inspired hope among students and parents.
A Grade 11 learner shared:
“I didn’t know there were so many bursary options. Now I feel more confident about my future.”
The initiative reflects a wider drive to strengthen local development through education and access to resources.
