On 23 September 2025 Bright attire, shared dishes, and open conversation filled the Department of Agriculture’s Peddie office as colleagues celebrated Heritage Day while learning how to spot and support mental-health needs. The message landed clearly: celebrating who we are can go hand in hand with caring for how we feel.
Their Story
Staff arrived in outfits representing their roots and brought traditional foods that sparked memories and stories. The Wellness Office set a warm tone, reminding everyone that culture builds connection and belonging, which are powerful anchors for wellbeing in busy workplaces.
The Event/Occasion
Hosted by the Wellness Office, the programme combined celebration with learning. Wellness officer Mrs. Zinakho Zamane-Tsako led short, focused sessions on recognising depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and eating disorders. She outlined simple steps for seeking help, from workplace channels to local clinics and trusted professionals, and offered practical ways to support a colleague with empathy and follow-through.
Community Reactions
Colleagues described the day as “grounding” and “useful,” praising the balance between heritage and health. Managers said the clear guidance on early signs and referral pathways will help teams respond sooner and with more confidence. Many left with contact numbers, check-in phrases, and a plan to keep the conversation going beyond the commemoration.
