The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) has announced scheduled blasting on the N2 national road between KwaBhaca and EmaXesibeni on Monday, 29 September 2025, at 12:00. The blast will occur approximately 13.7 km from KwaBhaca, causing temporary road closures. Motorists are urged to plan ahead and consider alternative routes to avoid delays during the operation.
What Happened
SANRAL confirmed that blasting is required on the N2 to support ongoing road works. The operation will be carried out at midday between KwaBhaca and EmaXesibeni.
Motorists traveling from Kokstad towards Mthatha are advised to exit the N2 at Kokstad and use the R56 via Matatiele to Nqanarhu, then connect to the R396 to Tsolo before rejoining the N2. Another option is to travel via Flagstaff and Lusikisiki on the R61 through Port St Johns before returning to the N2 at Mthatha.

Official Response
SANRAL Eastern Cape Provincial Head, Mbulelo Peterson, urged motorists to exercise caution:
“Motorists are asked to plan their trips accordingly, consider alternative routes and to use caution when making use of the road.”
He added that while the shortest diversion adds 69 km and around 50 minutes to the journey between Mthatha and Kokstad, the measures are necessary to ensure road safety during blasting.
The agency also apologised for any inconvenience and assured the public that updates will be shared via its official SANRAL media platform.
Community Impact
The scheduled blasting is expected to disrupt travel between KwaBhaca and EmaXesibeni, especially for commuters and businesses that rely on the N2 for transport. Taxi associations, freight operators, and regular travelers may experience longer delays and costs due to detours.
Local community leaders have welcomed SANRAL’s early advisory but emphasized the need for clear signage and real-time traffic management to minimize disruption.
