Residents of Mangwaneni under the O.R. Tambo District Municipality have welcomed the restoration of their water supply after going without for more than two years.

The water scheme, inherited from the Department of Water Affairs, had stood idle following the breakdown of its windmill-powered pumping system. The failure left households in the area without access to a reliable water source, forcing many to rely on alternative means.

According to the Municipality, its Monitoring & Evaluation and Plumbing Teams recently undertook repairs to the diesel engine and pipeline, bringing the scheme back into operation.

Municipal officials said the intervention was part of ongoing efforts to ensure service delivery in rural communities.

“This is not just about fixing pipes but restoring dignity to families who have been struggling without water,” a spokesperson said.

Households connected to the scheme will now have access to running water again, a development residents say will significantly improve their quality of life.

The O.R. Tambo District Municipality emphasised that ensuring access to water remains a priority and pledged to continue addressing infrastructure challenges across its jurisdiction.
