Minister Dr Leon Schreiber has announced a partnership with Capitec Bank, FNB, and Standard Bank that will allow South Africans to apply for Smart IDs and passports directly through the banks’ mobile apps.
The initiative will expand Home Affairs service points from just 30 branches to hundreds nationwide, with a strong focus on reaching rural areas and vulnerable communities.
According to the announcement, this digital shift aims to eliminate long queues, reduce travel distances, and replace the old green ID book with secure, modern digital IDs.
