Nomvo Nofuya, a dedicated farmer from EMaXesibeni (Ward 5) in the Alfred Nzo District, is making her mark in wool production and crop farming. Her mixed farming enterprise includes 105 sheep and 33 lambs, along with maize and vegetable production.
Last year, the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture supported her by planting maize on six hectares of land and providing vegetable seedlings. She also slaughters and sells meat during ceremony seasons and December holidays, boosting her household income.
This year, Nofuya has again planted six hectares of maize, continuing her commitment to crop production. She acknowledges the challenges women face in agriculture but believes resilience and passion can yield great rewards.
“In farming, especially as a woman, there are ups and downs, but with determination, it is possible to succeed,” she said.
She encouraged Eastern Cape women who have the skills to grow crops and rear livestock to do so as a way to drive away hunger and poverty.Her story reflects the potential of women-led farming enterprises in contributing to local food security and creating employment opportunities in rural areas.
