Zanele Matikinca from Mthatha won overall at a local agricultural awards event after taking first place in the best commercial farming category. Her journey from adversity to success stands as a testament to determination and innovation.

Following a spinal operation in 2010, Matikinca was advised against strenuous work. Undeterred, she shifted her focus to agriculture in 2012, starting a vegetable processing venture. By sourcing produce from local farmers, chopping and packaging it for markets, she built a business that now supplies Spar supermarkets, restaurants, and caterers in Mthatha. Today, she employs 20 people.

“I identified the need for ready-to-use vegetables while doing catering,” she said. “That gap turned into a thriving business.”

Matikinca expressed gratitude for government support, which included the provision of a truck, bakkie, a processing machine, and a large refrigerator. “Before, I used an unsuitable vehicle and a small fridge. Stores turned me away. Now, I meet all standards,” she added. Her total winnings amounted to R30 000.

In the agro-processing category, Philasande Mahlakatha claimed first prize and R15 000 for her innovative use of indigenous plants to produce essential oils used in cosmetics. Starting in 2019 without assistance, she relied on research and passion to grow her business. Support from the Department of Agriculture, including a processing machine and branding tools, helped her reach new heights.

Another winner, Gugulethu Qukula, walked away with R15 000 after winning the smallholder farming category. All three winners will represent their district at the provincial competition in August.
