In light of ongoing reports of gender-based violence across the Eastern Cape and South Africa, the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development is urging residents to make use of legal protections under the Sexual Offences Amendment Act (SOAA).

The Act protects anyone who has experienced rape, sexual assault, child pornography, incest, sexual grooming, or prostitution. Victims are encouraged to report cases immediately at their nearest police station or Thuthuzela Care Centre, often located within public hospitals.

Here’s What to Do If You or Someone You Know Has Been Affected:

  1. Go to your local police station or Thuthuzela Care Centre.
  2. Bring a friend or family member for support.
  3. The police will take your statement and provide a case number.
  4. Ask for a medical examination if needed — the results go into the case file.
  5. Always give accurate contact details, even after moving.

You can also call the Department of Justice & Constitutional Development (DoJ&CD) hotline at 080 122 9017 for assistance, guidance, or support with your case.

Victims are reminded that they are allowed to review or correct their statement, and should always request a case number to track progress.

Let’s break the silence on sexual violence and create safer communities across Pondoland. Report early, and ensure your case is handled with the dignity and urgency it deserves.
