The OR Tambo District Municipality raised concern over threats to Gift of the Givers staff during flood relief efforts, condemning the act as unacceptable. According to the municipality, unknown individuals approached the organisation’s team on Saturday, 14 June 2025, and ordered them to stop distributing water to communities affected by recent flooding. The municipality described the act as both “heartbreaking” and “disgusting,” labelling it a shameless attempt at extortion during a time of crisis.

Gift of the Givers has been actively working alongside government structures to assist residents displaced and devastated by heavy rains and flooding. The municipality praised the organisation’s swift response, noting that they did not wait for an invitation to assist but arrived immediately with vital supplies, including food and clean water.

The municipality said the act of threatening those delivering aid amounts to a moral and legal violation. “To prey on a crisis is to turn pain into profit, it is merciless, and it will not be tolerated”, said the municipality in a statement that it had issued.

The incident has been reported to law enforcement, and the municipality has guaranteed its full cooperation in ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.

Calling on the community to stand united against such criminal behavior, the municipality reaffirmed its commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts and protecting those who serve the vulnerable.
