The United Democratic Movement (UDM) in the Eastern Cape has announced the passing of Councillor Thobile Benjamin Gidigidi, affectionately known as Sir Gidz, with an outpouring of grief and tribute from across the province.
In a heartfelt statement, Bulelani Bobotyane, UDM Eastern Cape Provincial Secretary, described Gidigidi as a committed public servant who served as Chief Whip for the UDM in the Mnquma Local Municipality.
“His passion for justice, his fearless voice in defence of the marginalised, and his enduring commitment to clean and ethical governance have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of working alongside him,” Bobotyane said.
A Legacy of Service and Character
Beyond his leadership, Sir Gidz was praised for his warmth and humour, traits that earned him deep respect from political colleagues and the community. One of his most memorable sayings during council debates was, “ninganukiselwa yi barbecue sauce” — a humorous but firm reminder to remain focused.
“He brought not only discipline and integrity into Council chambers but also a unique warmth and humour,” the statement read.
Condolences and Reflection
The UDM extended deep condolences to the Gidigidi family, friends, and the broader Mnquma community. As the party mourns his passing, it also calls on members and citizens to honour his memory by upholding the values he embodied: humility, ethical leadership, and public service.
“Sir Gidz was more than a colleague. He was a brother, a mentor, and a true servant of the people,” Bobotyane concluded.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in due course.
