The bodies of three missing police officers were found in the Hennops River, ending a tense and heartbreaking search that had gripped the Gauteng community since their disappearance earlier this week.
The three constables, who were reported missing after failing to return from duty, were discovered by a SAPS search and rescue team late Monday evening. Initial reports suggest they may have drowned under still-unclear circumstances.
SAPS Launches Investigation into Incident
Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed the discovery and stated that a full investigation is underway. “We can confirm that the bodies of the missing officers were recovered from the Hennops River. Post-mortem examinations will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death,” he said.
The names of the officers have not yet been released pending notification of their families.
Community and Police Force Mourn the Loss
The tragic deaths have sent shockwaves through the community, with tributes pouring in from fellow officers and residents of Centurion and surrounding areas. Local residents gathered at the riverbank to light candles and pay respects.
Police Minister Bheki Cele is expected to visit the area and meet with the families of the deceased.
Dangerous Terrain and Rising Water Levels Cited
Unconfirmed sources close to the investigation have suggested that recent heavy rains and rising river levels could have contributed to the incident. The Hennops River, known for its strong currents and pollution, has been the site of several past drownings and search efforts.
Environmental groups have long warned about the hazards associated with the river, calling for stronger safety measures and rehabilitation.
