Takalani Sesame Returns with Season 17 on SABC2, Spotlighting School Readiness

Beloved children’s programme Takalani Sesame has officially launched its 17th season on SABC2, continuing its legacy of early childhood education with a fresh, curriculum-driven focus on school readiness. The season premiered on 7 April 2025 and airs weekdays at 15:00 in Sesotho, with an IsiNdebele version scheduled to follow on 28 April.

Produced by Sesame Workshop International South Africa, the new season builds on the momentum of Seasons 15 and 16, which also aired in indigenous languages and received positive reception for culturally relevant and age-appropriate content. As the show approaches its 25th anniversary in South Africa, the team remains committed to providing impactful learning experiences through play.

“We’re thrilled to bring yet another groundbreaking set of educational episodes to South African children,” said Dr Onyinye Nwaneri, Managing Director of Sesame Workshop South Africa.

According to Dr Nwaneri, 48% of South African children start school with developmental delays, making the new season’s focus more urgent than ever.

“Our next two seasons place a spotlight on School Readiness, ensuring children meet key developmental milestones and are better prepared for formal education,” she added.

Season 17 introduces science concepts through 13 new short-form episodes titled “Watch Play Learn Science”, designed to spark curiosity and foundational scientific thinking. Meanwhile, Season 18, set to follow shortly, will hone in on skills such as creative thinking, task persistence, and problem-solving—all key to cognitive development in early learners.

Both seasons will include episodes that feature social-emotional learning, songs about shapes and colours, daily routines, and positive affirmations, encouraging holistic development.

Dr Nwaneri concluded by reaffirming the show’s purpose:

“As an organisation, we want to help children to be smarter, stronger, and kinder, serving as a child’s trusted friend and a parent’s valued partner.”
