Healthcare services at St. Barnabas Hospital have been suspended following the theft of a water pump and vandalism of the water supply system. This unfortunate incident has severely disrupted the hospital’s ability to provide essential medical services and maintain critical operations, including laundry services.

In response, local leaders convened a multi-stakeholder meeting today, chaired by Nyandeni Local Municipality Mayor Banele Viwe Ndamase and attended by the OR Tambo District Executive Mayor, Mesuli Ngqondwana, and the hospital’s CEO. During the gathering, it was confirmed that a service provider has already been appointed to expedite necessary repairs.

“We urge the community to stand together against acts of vandalism that undermine our healthcare system,” Mayor Ndamase stated. “It is crucial for everyone to protect our government property and refrain from buying stolen goods.”

As immediate medical needs arise, patients have been relocated to nearby hospitals. Residents are encouraged to utilize these facilities in case of emergencies while efforts are underway to restore services at St. Barnabas hospital.

The government is fully committed to addressing this crisis and aims to have operations running normally by next week. “We appreciate the community’s understanding and support as we navigate this challenging situation,” the mayor added, emphasizing the importance of communal effort in safeguarding local resources.
