In two separate operations led by the provincial Crime Intelligence team in the North West province, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the seizure of five stolen vehicles and the arrest of six suspects in Jouberton Township and the Brits area between August 1 and August 2, 2024.
On Thursday, the local Operational Coordination Centre (OCC) carried out a crime intelligence-driven operation and arrested five Mozambican foreign nationals after locating them in possession of a stolen vehicle.
“The suspects were apprehended after members received and operationalised information about suspected stolen motor vehicle. On arrival at the identified address, the police found the suspects stripping parts from the red Mazda CX5,” said North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone.
The discovered vehicle is linked to a car hijacking case reported in Mmakau in July. A stolen motorbike and Mahindra were also found on the property.
The suspects, four male and one female, are charged with possession of suspected stolen goods.
In a separate arrest in Jouberton Township outside Klerksdorp on Friday, Provincial and Klerksdorp Crime Intelligence, working in tandem with the Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU), SA Tracker Connect, Jouberton Visible Policing, Insurance Crime Bureau (ICB), and Cap Security, recovered three stolen Toyota Etios vehicles and arrested a 41-year-old suspect.
“Preliminary investigations established that the cars were stolen in Alberton and Hartbeespoortdam between March 2021 and October 2023,” Brigadier Mokgwabone revealed.
The 41-year-old suspect was scheduled to appear before the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court on August 5, 2024, for possession of suspected stolen goods.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, applauded everyone involved in both operations for their accomplishments.
