From the small town of Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape to the vibrant streets of Durban, Nqubula Zukisani, better known by his stage name Kidsain-Hoodlum, is steadily carving a name for himself in the world of music. At just 26 years old, this multi-talented artist is making waves with his unique blend of Xhosa wave music, a fusion of afro pop, maskandi, hip-hop, and afro soul.
Currently based in Chatsworth, Durban, Kidsain-Hoodlum balances his music career with his role as an assistant teacher at Damorosa Pre-Vocational School. Despite the challenges of being an independent artist, his passion for music remains unwavering, fueled by the support and encouragement of his brothers and sisters.
“I’ve been working on my craft since 2013, playing instrumentals, writing songs, and recording,” says Kidsain-Hoodlum. “My family always gives me the energy to keep going, and their support means everything to me.”
Inspired by iconic figures like Zola 7, 2Pac, and Eminem, Kidsain-Hoodlum’s music is a reflection of his experiences and the lessons he’s learned from these legendary artists. “I’ve grown up listening to their music, and they’ve taught me how to write rhymes and songs with a message,” he shares.
Kidsain-Hoodlum’s journey in music hasn’t been without its setbacks. After starting with his debut song Ndicela ubuye in 2013, he faced challenges when his producer, Tarrence Bandras, left the scene in 2014. However, he made a comeback in 2016 with I’m so dope in my hood, a collaboration with Pastor Hlekani from Durban. Since then, he has released a series of tracks, including Jam of the 80’s with Macteng from Johannesburg, Music life with Naette, and Snake girl with Sean Oxen.
In 2022, Kidsain-Hoodlum saw significant success with songs like Ungadlali labafana, Ndisipana Qho, and Sain_life_freestyle, each showcasing his versatility and skill as a rapper and singer. His hit track IXETSHA in 2023 earned him a spot in the semifinals and finals of Chatsworth’s Got Talent, marking a milestone in his career.
“It was really hard to make it up to those finals,” he recalls. “But even though I didn’t win, I’m proud of what I achieved. It’s all about the culture, the hip-hop culture.”
Kidsain-Hoodlum’s latest project, Bring Back the Real iFani, is set to drop this Friday. The song pays homage to iFani, a pioneering Xhosa rapper, and reflects Kidsain-Hoodlum’s desire to bring Xhosa rap back into the spotlight. “iFani put Xhosa rap on the map, but I feel like he doesn’t get the respect he deserves anymore,” he says.
As an unsigned artist, Kidsain-Hoodlum is eager to take his music to the next level. “I’m an independent artist with potential, and I’m looking for management to invest in me. My music style, Xhosa wave, is made up of different elements and melodies. I sing, rap, and trap, and I’m ready to explore this talent on a global stage.”
