In a significant move to address homelessness, Eastern Cape Public Works and Human Settlements MEC, Siphokazi Lusithi, will hand over 120 completed houses to destitute families in Cabazana Village, Alfred Nzo District, on July 31, 2024.
The beneficiaries, who have been living in unbearable conditions, include a child-headed household of three who lost their mother and were staying in a mud structure. The new homes are part of the Cabazana 400 rural human settlements project in the Umzimvubu Local Municipality.
Later that afternoon, MEC Lusithi will conduct an oversight visit to the Emaxesibeni Office Precinct Block A to assess progress and interact with local leaders. The block, expected to be completed by February 2027, will house the Department of Transport and Department of Human Settlements.
The project has also created employment opportunities for 35 locals and trained over 21 young people, contributing to the community’s development.
This initiative demonstrates the Eastern Cape government’s commitment to addressing homelessness and improving living conditions for vulnerable families.
